Throughout the ages, a fine handmade kilim has been an important part of Eastern Culture and a symbol of enduring art. For thousands of years woman in various parts of Eastern Europian and the Orient have been handweaving kilims, carpets and rugs in their homes. These woman learned their weaving skills at an early age, taking months or ever years to complete the beautiful carpets, rugs and flatwoven kilims that were created for use in every aspect of daily life.

The very finest and intricately patterened of these weavings comprised a young womans dowry, symbols of her dreams and inspirations for perhaps, fertilti, protection and prosperity, often intermixed with a wealth of sacred motifs to create kilims that would represent the unique personality of each weaver.

The age old tradition of kilim and carpet making survives today despite dramatically changing lifestyles.Local customs have been modified to include the use of sophisticated patterns and modern technology, but the skill of the experienced artists and their individual interpretation of motifs and colors ensures the highest quality is still maintained in the rugs and kilims of today.

Historical information about the production of the first Jeravna hand made kilims and carpets dates back from 1780-1800.The oldest kilim kept by nowdays was produced by Ergen Noniovitsa in 1820.This kilim is kept now at The National History Museum in Sofia as a national relic.
